BSc (Hons) in Financial Services Management/Associateship

Overview

Please note that this qualification is being phased out and is only available to students currently registered.

Take your next step towards a successful career in the financial services industry by studying for a unique dual award that combines an honours degree from the University of Surrey and the professional Associateship from the ifs School of Finance.

The award brings together the strengths of the School of Management of the University of Surrey and 130 years of professional education experience in financial services from the ifs School of Finance. It is a qualification that genuinely merges the how-to-do skills of a professional award with the conceptual skills of a degree.

The dual award

Offered and taught jointly by the School of Management and the ifs on the Surrey campus. Students have the option of spending the third year as a professional training year (PTY). The PTY is an excellent opportunity to put the theories that you have learnt over the previous two years into practice, and experience the financial services environment first-hand. The year is assessed and will count towards your final grade.

The degree is assessed at Level 6 in the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.

The programme

The award will provide you with the skills and experience that you will need to be successful in the financial services industry.

The first year introduces you to today’s financial services and business environments. It builds upon your existing understanding of the financial services industry and examines the relevant management skills needed to succeed. You will explore how financial services organisations function and are managed, and will further develop your understanding of the environment in which they operate.

In the second year the emphasis moves to the reporting and information systems that are used within the industry. The option modules in year two allow you to concentrate your studies on either retail financial services or corporate financial services, depending upon where you see your career progressing.

In your final year you will study the importance of strategic planning and decisionmaking in the business and financial environment. You will be able to choose from a range of options to allow you to begin planning your career and select the specialism you may wish to enter.
