Overview

Principles of Lending and Credit is a Professional Certificate in Banking option module. You will find this module particularly useful if you are working, or aiming to work, in a lending environment. It will provide the lender, or prospective lender, with a framework to operate effectively and lend money safely and profitably, maximising the possibility of repayment by the borrower, or through suitable alternatives, where appropriate.
The early topics provide a broad framework of the legal and regulatory environment in which lenders operate, so that the lender is fully aware of the implications of making the lending decision. This is followed by an analysis of the different types of customers, their lending requirements and the range of lending services that can be used to satisfy those lending needs.
The general principles of security are then investigated, and applied to different forms of security, whether direct or third party, and whether covering personal or corporate debts.
An overview of the lending process includes a review of the lending cycle, the initial lending decision, the control and monitoring of lending, any early warning signals that the repayment of the debts could be potentially problematic, and the process of debt repayment, recovery or write-off.
The course concludes with the economic and social effects of lending and the importance of responsible lending.
