Demand doubles at the ifs School of Finance as UCAS reports 2012 university applications are down 9%

Monday, January 30, 2012

by: Matt Beasley

The ifs School of Finance, the not-for-profit financial higher education specialist has seen demand double for its 2012 full-time degree programmes.  This is despite the overall decline of 8.7 per cent in applications reported by UCAS today.  Formed in 1879, the City-based charity specialises in financial services education and started offering full-time BSc degrees in banking last year, having offered them on a part-time basis since 1996.

The increased demand at the ifs contrasts the steep fall in applications UCAS has witnessed, as the increasing cost of higher education forces many students to rethink their financial investment in higher education.

Vice Principal at the ifs Martin Day said:

“This is only the second year we’ve run our degree programmes on a full time basis however the increased demand this year hasn’t surprised us.  We offer a professional, affordable degree with a real focus on employability skills. Our students like the fact that from week one they are rubbing shoulders with those already working in the industry and can graduate with a professional financial qualification, giving them an advantage in the employment market.”

“As the reality of £9,000 tuition fees begins to bite, students applying now are considering the value of their higher education investment like never before;  They are looking at where and what to study and deciding whether the course they want will position them for a job and career that will justify the expense.”
