Qualifications for a new retail banking environment

In these difficult times retail banks, in common with the wider industry, organisations face a significant challenge of rebuilding the trust and confidence of customers in their institutions. It is at the front line, in branches and contact centres, where this challenge is most pronounced and the majority of customer interaction occurs.

This process of rebuilding trust must begin with organisations finding a way to reassure existing and potential customers that its staff are competent, knowledgeable and focused not simply on the sale of  products but on the provision of services that meet their customers' requirements and needs.

The end of the era for self-regulation in retail banking also has significant implications on the sector; it will be vitally important for all organisations to demonstrate not just that customer facing staff are aware of the new regulations, but also that they truly understand them and are able to apply this understanding in practice and within the context of the regulatory environment.

On 1 November 2009, the FSA’s new Banking Conduct Regime came into force.

This presents a new challenge for providers of retail financial services who must ensure that their organisations embed the requirements of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), Banking Conduct of Business Sourcebook (BCOBS), the new Payment Services Regulations (PSRs) and Treating Customers Fairly and can demonstrate understanding of these requirements at all levels.
