ifs Student Investor Challenge

The ifs Student Investor Challenge is now open for registrations!

The ifs Student Investor Challenge is the UK's premier investment competition available free to all schools and colleges.

The free interactive online share trading game is for students aged between 14 and 19 and enables participants to develop their skills in team working, communication, decision making, problem solving and time management. It also introduces students to concepts of analysis, investment and risk and helps develop practical and theoretical understanding of finance and financial services.

With share prices provided by Bloomberg, a provider of financial data, news and analytics, the ifs Student Investor Challenge is the most realistic competition available.

Over 35,000 students from 1,000 schools benefited from the experience in 2010/11 with the best performing teams invited to regional finals and from there to the national final in London, where the guest speaker was BBC Business Editor, Robert Peston.

As before, this year’s winning team will receive an incredible prize of an all expenses paid educational trip to New York, plus £2,000 for their school and £200 for each team member. There are also a number of other prizes available throughout the competition.

King Edward School, Bath has won this last year’s ifs School of Finance Student Investor Challenge.  The team, “We’re only doing this for UCAS!” beat over 40,000 other teenagers and 10,000 teams to take first place in a hard fought final. They went to New York on an all expenses paid educational trip, as well as winning £2,000 for their school and £200 each.

The national final was in two parts; a business challenge in the morning and an afternoon presentation answering the question “Are the banks doing enough to help UK plc prosper?” Judging the final was Joanne Hart, Investments Editor at the Mail on Sunday, Lawrence Gold from The Bank of Mum and Dad, Anne Kiem and Donald Brydon, Chief Executive and former Chairman respectively at the ifs.

The winning team consisted of teenagers Alice Hamer, Conor Thomas, Oliver Schofield and Robert Wilcox. They beat Hills Road Sixth Form College from Cambridge into second place and Peter Symonds College Winchester into third.
