All faculty members have many years of experience of working in or with financial services organisations and the detailed technical knowledge to help individuals and groups apply their learning to the realities of their day-to-day working life and responsibilities.
Compliance, regulation and governance
Bobby Deagan
Bobby Deegan has held a number of senior compliance roles in the financial services industry as Compliance Director of Aon, the largest broker in the UK following which he became Group Compliance Director for JLT Group plc. He advises clients on a range of regulatory and risk issues particularly in the areas of governance and operational control processes and has experience in dealing with all levels of management.
Charles Cattell
Charles Cattell is a consultant and practitioner with extensive expertise in the financial services sector. He is a founding Partner of The Cattellyst Consultancy, a competence and compliance consultancy established in 1992 which advises and trains a broad range of financial services clients on the human aspects of regulation including the management of people risk, the development of competence and expertise and the enhancement of corporate culture.
Peter Haines
Peter Haines is a chartered accountant with experience as a regulator with the London Stock Exchange, The Securities Association and the Securities and Futures Authority and as a senior Compliance Officer and Money Laundering Reporting Officer with blue-chip American, European and Japanese institutions. He has travelled widely in these roles and has gained experience in various US, European and Asian financial centres.
Professor Roger Steare BA FRSA FREC
Roger Steare helps people in organisations all over the world develop good thinking, positive dialogue and ethical behaviour. His work has been endorsed by the great and the good, including President Jimmy Carter, The Rt. Hon. David Cameron MP and top executives from firms such as HSBC and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Roger is the author of ethicability®: How to decide what’s right and find the courage to do it.
Lending, relationship management and retail strategy
Rod Springett
Rod has over 36 years experience of UK Banking having been a manager firstly with Midland Bank Limited and then HSBC Bank plc. Amongst a range of managerial positions he was a very successful relationship manager handling portfolios of business customers of all shapes and sizes. He discovered his true vocation was however training and he has developed into an exceptional facilitator and deliverer of innovative and memorable learning programmes.
Caroline Murray
Caroline has an excellent breadth and depth of experience in corporate and retail lending, securities and recoveries, gained from her 16 years of working at Barclays Bank. In addition to her extensive experience in branch and head office banking she also maintains a good understanding of banking law, both in theory and practice. Caroline has 11 years teaching experience, coupled with examining at degree level and authoring and presenting bespoke workshop materials.
Risk management
Simon Baker
Simon is Deputy Head of Consulting for Quadrant Risk Management (International) Ltd and has previously worked for Lloyds TSB for 27 years. He led the Lloyds TSB Basel 2 programme from inception through to implementation of the new regime. Simon also sat on the Lloyds TSB Public Policy and Regualtion Steering Committee, overseeing all regulatory issues. He held earlier leadership roles in Group Risk Policy, Change Management, Corporate and Commercial Banking and Correspondent Banking. Simon has also authored White Papers on Risk in Basel 2 World, the Credit Crunch, Emerging Practices in Operational Risk, and Stress Testing and Scenario Analysis.
Simon Ling-Locke MBA, FCIB, DipFS
Simon Ling-Locke has over 30 years banking experience in the international markets and has spent 25 years working in the syndicated loan market gaining a wide range of experience across risk management, particularly credit risk and distressed debt in major banking organisations including Barclays, Tokai and UFJ banks. In addition to his financial expertise, he has extensive experience lecturing at a number of high ranking universities and professionally on public and private courses around the world.
Financial crime
Stephen Platt
Stephen is Chairman of the BakerPlatt Group and is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s leading international ’crisis’ lawyers specialising in the regulation of financial services and financial crime. He is frequently engaged in politically sensitive matters involving the recovery of the proceeds of political corruption. Stephen acts primarily for institutional clients and regulatory authorities globally. In 2009 Stephen was appointed by the UN and World Bank as a ’core expert’ on the StAR anti-corruption initiative.
Skills development
Derek Arden
Derek Arden is one of the UK’s leading advisors, coaches and professional speakers on the subject of negotiation. He has worked in 27 countries, with 5 business schools and has been a visiting lecturer at the Henley Management College for 12 years. As a director of an international bank’s corporate banking division, he negotiated many complex transactions; the largest was the financing of a £3bn takeover.
Hamish Taylor
Hamish trained at Procter & Gamble, was Head of Brands at British Airways, Group CEO of Eurostar and CEO of Sainsbury’s Bank, all before he was 40. He has been dubbed the ‘Master Thief’ for his record of driving innovation by transferring ideas between sectors, from putting beds in aircraft at BA with the help of a yacht designer and using Disney to help fix airport queuing problems, to influencing compliance tactics with the help of a rugby referee. Hamish works with major organisations around the world in their quest to find breakthroughs by looking outside their current environment.
Terry Russell
Terry Russell is an outstanding facilitator used to working at the highest levels of management. Terry is known for his enthusiasm and ability to challenge and get right to the heart of the issue as well as his incredibly practical approach to training. Terry has held a number of senior sales management positions including Head of sales and sales director for two national retail financial services organisations. Both companies were renowned for their outstanding levels of productivity.
